WHAT IS A UNIQUE STUDENT IDENTIFIER (USI)?

A USI is your individual education number for life. It gives you an online record of your Vocational Education and Training (VET) undertaken in Australia.

If you're at university, TAFE or doing other nationally recognised training, you need a USI. Without one, you can't get Commonwealth financial assistance, nor your qualification, nor your statement of attainment.

FORGOT YOUR USI OR DON'T KNOW IF IT EXISTS OR NOT?

Some people have already had the USI created for them or with them, but have forgotten, are unsure, or never knew it happened.

If you have forgotten your USI (or don't know if it exists yet or not), you can retrieve it in just a few minutes.

On the site (click HERE), select 'Forgotten USI' to retrieve it. You will need to enter a few details and answer your 'Check Questions' to verify who you are.

If you have not activated your USI account, you will need one form of ID to verify yourself.

HAVEN'T GOT A USI: CREATE ONE

There is no minimum age for a USI but you do need verifiable identification to create one. Before you start, check the list of identification documents you can use to create your USI as well as important information on how to record your name (click HERE).

Make sure your name matches your USI (click HERE) to avoid enrolment issues, access your training records and graduate without delays. If you are at university, make sure your identification reflects your legal name.

It is recommended that you use the same identification document to create your USI, your Tax File Number (TFN) and MyGov account.

To create a USI:

- Access the Student Portal (click HERE).

- Select ‘create USI’.

- Use a personal email address, not a shared or work email.

- Provide one form of ID (click HERE).

- Secure your account with multi-factor authentication (MFA). If you don’t have a personal mobile or email for MFA, you can still access your USI account using your username, password and security questions.

Your USI account is now activated.

You should now be able to find your USI as per 'FORGOT YOUR USI' instructions above.
