DANGER

Assess the scene for danger before any other action. This is the first and non-negotiable step in 'D.R.S.A.B.C.D.'

Danger includes traffic, fire, electricity, hazardous materials, unstable structures, or aggressive bystanders.

If the area is unsafe, do not enter. You should protect yourself first so that you remain able to assist. A rescuer who becomes a casualty helps no one.

Identify the specific hazards present.

Move the casualty only if leaving them in place exposes them to greater immediate risk than the movement itself. In most cases, it is safer to manage the danger around the casualty than to drag or carry them.

Use available resources — barriers, bystanders or equipment — to isolate or remove the threat without adding new risks.

If danger cannot be neutralised — and the casualty remains in peril — call emergency services immediately and report the situation clearly. Provide precise details of the hazards and location. Then wait for trained responders equipped to operate in that environment.

Accepting what you cannot safely change is part of effective response. Rushing in without assessment leads to more victims, not fewer.

Stay calm, stay factual, and act only within the limits of your safety. This is the disciplined foundation of first aid.
