WHAT IS MYID?

MyID is your Digital Identity and makes it easier to prove who you are online.

Use your myID to access participating federal government online services like the Australian Tax Office, CentreLink, Veterans' Affairs, etc…

BEFORE YOU CREATE A MYID

You need to be 15 years or older.

You need a smart phone.

You need a personal email address (not a shared email, nor a work email).

DOWNLOAD THE MYID APP

Download the myID app from Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.

ENTER YOUR DETAILS

Open the myID app on your smart device and follow the prompts.

You need to enter your full name, date of birth and a personal email address.

CHOOSE YOUR IDENTITY STRENGTH

You can set up a Basic, Standard or Strong myID.

The government online service you want to access determines the minimum identity strength you need.

NOTE THAT YOU MUST HAVE A 'STRONG' LEVEL TO ACCESS YOUR TAX FILE NUMBER OR CENTRELINK.

While you may be asked to verify an Australian passport and other documents in the app, this is not required if you’ve achieved the identity strength you need.

USING YOUR MYID

Once set up, you can use your myID to access government online services without proving your identity each time or remembering passwords for each service.

Generally, to access an online service using your myID:

- Go to the log in page of the service you want to access.

- Select Continue with Digital Identity.

- Select myID as your Identity Provider.

- Enter your myID email address, then select Get code.

Tip: you can select 'Remember me' to login faster when using the same device and browser in future. You won’t need to enter your email and the 4-digit code will be pre-filled in your app.

- A 4-digit code will appear on the login screen.

- Log into your myID app using your 10-character password, fingerprint or face.

Tip: to login faster, you can enable fingerprint or face in Settings in your myID app.

- Enter or accept the 4-digit code in your myID app.

- Go back to your browser to provide consent to sharing the information outlined on screen.

Only a small amount of your information is passed to the service you want to access. Usually this is limited to your name, date of birth and contact details.
