OPENING TRANSMISSIONS

Do not say 'DO YOU READ ME?' Only use transmission openers, e.g. 'ALPHA ONE, THIS IS BRAVO SIX, OVER' and wait 5 seconds. Then say it again. If they do not answer after your second attempt, you end the transmission by saying 'ALPHA ONE, THIS IS BRAVO SIX, NOTHING HEARD, OUT.'

Do not say 'COME IN', e.g. 'ALPHA ONE, THIS IS BRAVO SIX, COME IN, OVER.' Only use transmission openers, e.g. 'ALPHA ONE, THIS IS BRAVO SIX, OVER.' You've made your point that you want to talk. Don't waste radio time with superfluous words.

To open a transmission with another callsign... state their callsign, then THIS IS CALLSIGN (transmitter), then OVER.

'ALPHA ONE, THIS IS BRAVO SIX, OVER.'

Waits 5 seconds for a response. If they have not responded, call again.

'ALPHA ONE, THIS IS BRAVO SIX, OVER.'

Waits 5 seconds for a response. If they have not responded, state the following to end the transmission and allow the net to re-open for others. Or open a transmission with a different callsign.

'ALPHA ONE, THIS IS BRAVO SIX, NOTHING HEARD, OUT.'

REPORTS

There are a number of reports you can request from another callsign as the opening line of your transmission. The primary reports used are:

  • RADIO CHECK (Test how well you can hear each other)

Opening line:

'ALPHA ONE, THIS IS BRAVO SIX, RADIO CHECK, OVER.'

  • LOCSTAT (Location Status: Tell us where you are)

Opening line:

'ALPHA ONE, THIS IS BRAVO SIX, LOCSTAT, OVER.'

  • SITREP (Situation Report: Tell us what's going on)

Opening line:

'ALPHA ONE, THIS IS BRAVO SIX, SITREP, OVER.'

  • CASEVAC (Casualty Evacuation: We need a medical evacuation)

Opening line:

'ALPHA ONE, THIS IS BRAVO SIX, CASEVAC, OVER.'

CLOSING TRANSMISSIONS

Do not use 'OVER AND OUT'. Use one or the other. Not both. One means to stop your conversation. The other means to keep talking.

If you open the transmission dialogue between you and another callsign, it is you who must end it with 'OUT' at the completion of your back-and-forth. Vice-versa, if someone calls you, you are never to end it with 'OUT', but must say 'OVER' - even if your dialogue has been completed - and allow them to say 'OUT.'

No other callsign is allowed to speak unless spoken to. This means there can be other callsigns waiting im/patiently to use the frequency to transmit. Once you say 'OUT', other callsigns are free to speak.

If you want to continue using the net to prevent other callsigns from cutting in, you can end your first transmission with one callsign by saying 'OUT TO YOU', and then immediately call another callsign.

E.g. to end it with A-1 and open with C-3, say:

'ALPHA ONE, OUT TO YOU... CHARLIE THREE, THIS IS BRAVO SIX, OVER.'
