WHY GET A PASSPORT?

1. It’s a formal government-issued ID

Not only is a passport a legal proof of ID, but it’s recognised across the globe as such. Student IDs and Driver's Licences don’t get you very far abroad, but passports are universally accepted.

It’s handy to have a passport as back-up when entering bars if your driver's licence has been lost, and it’s even more useful to help you out of trouble with the police in Bali or to apply for a monthly metro card in Poland.

2. It’s your ticket to the world

Some passports give you more freedom than others, but for Australians, a passport opens the door to a majority of the world. That’s around 189 destinations to visit, enjoy, get lost in, learn from, and go back to.

It's 189 additional reasons to have a passport.

3. Easy proof of citizenship

Whether at home or overseas, a passport proves that you have the right to be in your home country (or temporary access to another country).

4. It’s a prerequisite for visas

Many countries require a visa to pass through their borders, and it just makes the whole application process a lot easier if you already have your passport.

Sometimes, a passport is all you actually need in order to qualify for a visa.

5. More work opportunities

Whether you want to earn some extra pocket money with a seasonal job overseas - like winter ski season in New Zealand - or you received a promotion that requires international travel, a passport lets you seize many more professional business opportunities.

Not only does international travel look good on resume, but many companies have a preference in hiring/promoting individuals that are ready to board planes.

6. You can study in some great places

Getting a passport is your chance to study at universities overseas.

Not only does study abroad strengthen and evolve character, but it sets individuals up with an international network for all future endeavours.

7. Peace of mind

Surprise birthday trip?

Wedding invitation?

Funeral?

Work relocation?

Partner springing tickets on you?

Pacific cruise raffle winner?

There are endless reasons to hop on a plane or a boat, and many of them are last-minute and unexpected. Having a passport already in your possession means that you are ready for any adventure, anywhere, anytime.

Remember to renew your passport at least six months before it expires.

8. You can track your adventures

A passport not only opens the passenger door to a world of destinations and stories, but also serves as a travel diary through the years.

Visas, trip dates and border control stamps are all documented inside making for a nice memoir to flip through and reminisce about and inspire new travels.

9. Win bingo!

Most importantly, you can tick off countries on your World Travel Bingo card, and compete with and beat everyone you know to finishing a line on the board.
