WHY WOULD I NEED AMBULANCE COVER?

Australian Ambulances will be there for you in an emergency and will provide the highest quality patient care in any situation.

However, Ambulance services in most States and Territories are not free, nor are they covered by Medicare.

The cost of ambulances is the individual's responsibility everywhere. The only exception is Queensland and its residents, even if they travel interstate.

For all Australians (except Queenslanders), Private Health Insurance is meant to be there to cover the fees of any callout and subsequent transport.

When commencing a policy with Private Health Insurance, you will need to check whether it covers all, some, none or only one ambulance call-out per year.

These details differ between States and Territories, between insurance companies, and within the many versions of policy offered by those companies.

Check each State and Territory below for some elaboration and their corresponding links.

QUEENSLAND

All Queensland residents are automatically covered for the cost of emergency services Australia-wide. This is paid for by the Queensland State Government. You don’t have to do anything to set up your coverage.

If you do receive an invoice for ambulance treatment or transport provided to you by another State or Territory ambulance service, forward the invoice along with proof of Queensland residency directly to the Queensland Ambulance Service.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

If you do not have Private Health Insurance, or your insurance policy will not cover Ambulance fees, you'll have to pay the $200+ bill for an ambulance call-out or the $1,000+ bill for emergency transport.

Or...

South Australia offers its own Ambulance Cover for $100+ per year.

Ambulance Cover commences on the day after the date of joining for emergency transport, and two months after the date of joining for non-emergency transports.

NORTHERN TERRITORY

If you do not have Private Health Insurance, or your insurance policy will not cover Ambulance fees, you'll have to pay the $400+ bill for an ambulance call-out and pay by the kilometre for transport.

Or...

Northern Territory St John's Ambulance offers its own Ambulance Cover for $100+ per year.

VICTORIA

If you do not have Private Health Insurance, or your insurance policy will not cover Ambulance fees, you'll have to pay the $600+ bill for an ambulance call-out or the $1,300+ bill for emergency transport.

Or...

Victoria offers its own Ambulance Cover for $50+ per year.

TASMANIA

Most Ambulance fees in Tasmania are waived by the Tasmanian Government if they have not been covered by your own Private Health Insurance.

This means that, if you require an Ambulance, you will receive a bill in the mail. From there, you need to apply for a waiver. There are numerous reasons for receiving a waiver, and each reason comes with different things you need to send back to Tasmanian Ambulance Finance.

Click HERE for the full list.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Some Ambulance fees in WA are waived by the West Australian Government if they have not been covered by your own Private Health Insurance.

There are numerous reasons for receiving a waiver. Click HERE for the full list.

If your waiver is not accepted, you will be required to pay the $1,000+ fee for an urgent call-out or $600+ fee for non-urgent.

NEW SOUTH WALES

Ambulance cover is ONLY available through Private Health Insurance in New South Wales.

If you are not covered by Private Health Insurance, you will pay $350+ for a call-out, and pay by the kilometre for transport.

AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY

Ambulance cover is ONLY available through Private Health Insurance in the ACT.

If you are not covered by Private Health Insurance, you will pay $700+ for a call-out, and $1,000+ for transportation.
