GIVE YOURSELF A HAND

Masturbation – the act of stimulating your own genitals for pleasure – is a normal and healthy part of a person’s sexual experience and a great way to discover what you’re comfortable with. The best part is, it’s for everyone.

Some people enjoy masturbating regularly, while others prefer to not to do it at all (although for men, approaching 90 days without ejaculation can become simply impossible). Both are totally okay! Regardless of your relationship status, age or sexuality, it’s a healthy way to learn more about your body with many surprising health benefits.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS

Masturbation promotes better sleep, reduces stress and increases relaxation. Come home from a busy day of studying or working and give yourself a hand to relax your muscles and help you fall asleep.

Masturbation releases endorphins that influence mental wellbeing

Masturbation releases endorphins. Endorphins are hormones which create feelings of pleasure and wellbeing. Endorphins are known to control our response to stress, and ultimately work to improve our mood and calm us down.

For women, orgasms may help reduce menstrual cramping and speed up childbirth

During orgasm in women, the uterus contracts and relaxes while releasing endorphins and our love hormone, oxytocin. Both hormones relax the body and can make you feel happier and less stressed, which can have an especially positive effect during menstruation. Oxytocin can act as a natural painkiller, which some find assists in reducing menstrual cramping.

Fun fact: some specialists recommend masturbation during labour; though it may be the last thing you feel like doing at the time. The release of oxytocin can make contractions progress faster during labour, while also promoting bonding with your newborn as it triggers nurturing behaviour.

Masturbation can help promote positive body image

Several studies have found a correlation between masturbation and positive body image. In men particularly, those who masturbate more frequently become more able to associate pleasure with their bodily responses. In realising this, they may develop greater satisfaction with their body and have an improved sense of self-confidence.

THE SEXUAL HEALTH BENEFITS

Masturbation is a form of safe sex

Of all sexual activities, masturbation is the safest. When masturbating solo, there’s absolutely no chance of acquiring a sexually transmitted infection (STI) or becoming pregnant.

It helps you become familiar with your sexual responses

Masturbation can help individuals to realise what they enjoy and dislike, as well as form sexual boundaries for themselves. This may help people better communicate their wishes to their sexual partner/s in the future.

ASSOCIATED STIGMAS

Some people feel embarrassed about masturbation due to outdated myths.

In the past, masturbation has sometimes incorrectly been thought to be just for men, and blamed for causing health issues, perversions, reduced sexual function, infertility and more... none of which are true.

It’s important to remember there is nothing shameful about having a relationship with your own body. No body part you have is “wrong”, and nothing your body does is abnormal.

For some who choose to masturbate, it is seen as an act of self-care, a time for learning and/or personal development.

WHAT IF YOU JUST DON'T

A lot of people will look down on boys and men, especially, for masturbating. Those who are the loudest about telling you just to "stop and never touch yourself again" have a 99% chance that they've never reached 90 days without touching themselves. So, don't take their self-guilt and pass it onto other guys.

The entire process of sperm production and maturation takes just under 3 months. Anyone who's reached even the middle of their third month could attest to the experience of it becoming a very public problem... if they ever admitted to it.

What happens if a guy stops masturbating:

Phase 1: The Initial Week (Days 1–7)

  • There are intense cravings and urges. The body and brain – which have become accustomed to regular dopamine releases – will strongly crave stimulation. This is characterised by high horniness and a strong desire to masturbate.

  • There can be mood swings and irritability. Withdrawal can lead to crankiness, frustration and increased stress, similar to quitting a stimulant.

  • There is increased sensitivity. Erections may feel stronger or more frequent, and genitals may become more sensitive.

Phase 2: The "Flatline" (Weeks 2–6)

  • Many men experience a "flatline," where libido disappears entirely, and they may experience a temporary lack of sexual desire, no erections, and even symptoms of depression.

  • Withdrawal symptoms can include anxiety, fatigue and insomnia. Moodiness may peak during this period as the brain tries to recalibrate its reward system.

  • While some report "brain fog" and difficulty concentrating, others report improved mental focus as they break the compulsive cycle.

Phase 3: The "Reboot" (Weeks 7–12+)

  • As sperm reach their maturity, the libido returns.

Pros:

  • Men frequently report improved confidence, increased motivation to pursue tasks (due to energy reallocation), better sleep and lower levels of mental fatigue.

  • Some men feel more energetic and productive, although this may be due to the time and mental effort previously spent on masturbation being redirected to exercise or hobbies.

Cons:

  • The feeling of the need to masturbate returns, and can gradually become unbearable.

  • Erections begin to become uncontrollable as men edge closer and closer to 90 days. Erections can start from once a day to twice to twenty times, each lasting longer and rising at inappropriate times.

  • A penis can become sensitive enough to the slightest movement that underwear brushing is enough to stimulate.

  • A penis will begin leaking semen often and noticeably stain underwear, which can seep through trousers.

  • Although unused sperm will be absorbed into the body, the unbearable pleasurable sensitivity of a penis is more likely to have a man so desperate to masturbate before this can occur; both to relieve themselves of the stimulation and to reduce the potential public humiliation of endless, obvious erections and wet-dreams staining clothes.

  • A man is more likely to come close or complete his 90 days masturbation-free with the feeling of guilt that they've failed to stop altogether. But it's a feeling of guilt imposed by someone who just said "don't do it ever", who has never reached 90 days themselves.

There's genuinely no good reason to stop unless you want to feel for yourself the strain around the 80 - 90 days. Maybe it will give you a little feeling of confidence that you've accomplished such a task leading up to 80 days but, after that, when the uncontrollable erections and wet-dreams begin, all you're left with is a lack of confidence that you've failed to reach that point when your body absorbs the mature sperm... a time when you're out in public, desperate to touch yourself to stop inappropriately saluting around others.

TALK ABOUT MASTURBATION WITH YOUNG PEOPLE

Unfortunately, masturbation and sexual activities can get a bad rap due to these myths and stigmas. Studies have found that young adults and teenagers seek sexual health information predominately through the internet for reasons of privacy and confidentiality.

It’s important for us all to work towards normalising sex-positive messages about masturbation to reduce associated feelings of shame and fear in our youth. When approaching the subject as a parent, carer or teacher and communicating with young people, here are a few important things to remember when preparing yourself to have a conversation:

  • There is no “right age” or set time to discuss masturbation with children. While some don’t explore it until their teen years, other children may begin touching their genitals as toddlers to self-soothe. If you haven’t noticed anything, it’s recommended to talk to them about self-pleasuring when they near puberty.

  • Rather than focusing on the activity, place a focus on the setting in which it occurs in. Remind your child that masturbation is fine if they are aware that it is a private activity which they should only do in a private place.

  • Ensure your child copes with stress in a healthy way. People can turn to masturbation as a coping mechanism, which can affect their life and/or activities.

  • Remember that masturbation doesn’t always have to be viewed with a sexual lens. It’s a normal way for children and teenagers to explore their body and senses.

CONSENT

Where mutual masturbation occurs (masturbation with another or others), consent is required from all parties. Ask each other for permission, pay attention to changes in body language and remember that people can change their mind at any point.

Remember that masturbation is a form of sex. A person cannot have sex with or perform a sex act with someone who has not given their consent. To put it simply, it is illegal to have sex, or to continue to have sex with a person who changes their mind and no longer gives consent.

It is not uncommon for masturbation with a partner to lead to penetrative sex. Make sure you are staying safe by using protective contraception. You can get an STI through any form of unprotected sex; vaginal, anal, oral sex and the use of sex toys.

REMEMBER, IT'S INDIVIDUAL

Sexual pleasure is very individual and looks different for everyone. Remember that masturbation is a healthy and safe sexual activity that can make you feel relaxed, happier and more comfortable within yourself.

If you have any questions or are unsure on how to discuss this topic with your children, please see your GP for professional and personalised advice.

FINAL WORDS

Don't guilt yourself into not doing it because some other fella – who's never before reached 90 days themselves – makes you feel dirty.

Masturbation releases endorphins which helps you relax and fall asleep.

Masturbation releases oxytocin – our 'love' hormone – which can act as a painkiller.

Masturbation releases dopamine, which is a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure, reward and motivation.

Start combining giving yourself a hand with "The Most Ridiculously Effective Way for Guys to Chill at Home" and your body will learn that once you implement one, it knows it'll get the other. You'll train your brain into giving you an extra dopamine hit simply slipping on a suit.
